The invention concerns a novel method for preparing N-alkyl substituted aliphatic tertiary amides. More particularly the invention concerns preparation of a 2-isopropyl-2,3-dimethyl-N-alkylbutanamide. Preferably, it concerns preparation of 2-isopropyl-N-2,3-trimethylbutanamide. The inventive method for preparing N-alkyl substituted aliphatic tertiary amines is characterized in that it includes: (i) reacting a carboxamide of formula (II), wherein: R<SUB>1</SUB>, R<SUB>2</SUB> and R<SUB>3</SUB>, identical or different, represent a C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>4</SUB> alkyl group and the sum of the number of carbon atoms of R<SUB>1</SUB>, R<SUB>2</SUB> and R<SUB>3</SUB> is not less than 4; with an aldehyde of formula (III) R<SUB>5</SUB> - CHO, wherein: R<SUB>5</SUB> represents a hydrogen atom or a C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>3</SUB> alkyl group; (ii) followed by catalytic hydrogenolysis of the resulting compound leading to the production of an N-alkyl substituted aliphatic tertiary amide. |
