PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane element capable of protecting sufficiently the tubular membrane from external matter, and dispensing with a water-collection pipe. SOLUTION: This membrane element 3a comprises a membrane assembly 18 formed by gathering multiple ceramic tubular membranes 17, protective cylinders 19 covering the outer circumference of the assembly 18, and packing materials 22 joining both ends of the tubular membranes 17 with both ends of the protective cylinders 19, and openings 17a of both ends of the tubular membranes 17 face both ends of the membrane elements 3a. A water collecting space 24 collecting filtrate is formed at one part of the membrane assembly 18, the water collecting space 24 is formed by being surrounded with multiple tubular membranes 17.
