PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a halftoning method for representing a gray scale from a low density to a high density by using only a coloring material of the same color, in digital printing, and an image forming apparatus using the method. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus and a gray-scale representation method are characterized in that: firstly, dots are gradationally represented up to the maximum density of one layer of the coloring material by forming an area gray-scale image up to a range in a visually solid state through the use of one layer of the coloring material; and after that, the area gray-scale image is similarly formed on a second layer or later by superposing the coloring material on the coloring material as the first layer in the visually solid state, so that a higher-density area can be gradationally represented.
