Drafting apparatus comprises a top-roll carrier and weighting arm and a top roll carried by a second arm mounted to swing in the carrier arm and a opening between the two arms to face the top roller against a cooperating lower roller, means being provided for varying the pressure applied by the spring. In Fig. 2, the front top roll 10 is carried by a guide arm 8 pivotally mounted on a pin 6 so as to be rockable vertically and horizontally. The pin 6 is carried by a U shaped number 3 slidable in a U shaped carrier 2 and fixed where desired by a screw 5. The arm 8 is weighted by springs 14 extending from upper abutments 16, one of the springs engaging the arm directly, and the other doing so through an adjustable lower abutment 17. This comprises a cup with a flange against which the spring abuts slidable with clearance over a bush 19 fixed to the arm; threaded in the bush with its head engaging the bush is a screw 18 engaging a recess in the cup. The weighting-pressure may accordingly be changed by omitting the screw or changing it for screws of other lengths. Such screws may be of different colours. The second spring 14 may be similarly adjustable. In Fig. 4, the loading of the spring is adjusted by a pin 26 resting at its base on an arm of a pivoted lever 27, the other arm of which bears against an eccentrically-mounted hexagonal member 28, of which the faces are differently coloured, that can be rotated by a tool 32 fitted in one of two bores 33. The pin 26 may bear directly on a member such as 28 that is fast with a shaft extending to an acessible position where it can be turned by a suitable tool. The second spring 14 may also be adjustable by an adaptation of this arrangement, to a different extent if desired, Fig. 8, not shown. A member 39 may limit the fall of the guide-arm when the carrier arm is raised by engaging a stop 40 on the member 3. |
