Described is a process for the preparation of 2,5-diamino- 4,6-dihalopyrimidine of the general formula (III) in which X is a halogen atom, comprising the reaction of a 2,5-diamino-4,6- dihydroxypyrimidine of the formula (IV) with a phosphorus oxyhalide and a quaternary ammonium halide or an amine or a salt thereof in a halogenated hydrocarbon as a solvent.
