Determining overall coagulation activity of blood or plasma sample comprising adding a defined quantity of a highly specific, non-irreversible thrombin inhibitor to a blood or plasma sample to induce coagulation, is new. After a defined time, the consumed quantity of the admixed thrombin inhibitor is determined in a known way. The thrombin inhibitor is directed against the active center in the thrombin and against the "anion binding exosite 1". An independent claim is included for a kit for determining the coagulation activity of a blood sample.
