PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus forming an image of high image quality with no occurrence of a fixing failure even when a large volume of image formation is carried out at high speed immediately after an image forming operation is started from a state of non image forming operation. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with a fixing apparatus consisting of an exterior heating member provided with a heating means abutted on at least one of a fixing member or a pressurizing member each provided with a heating means, a surface temperature sensor detecting the surface temperature of the fixing member or the pressurizing member on which the exterior heating member is abutted and outputting the temperature information and a control means controlling each heating means to each set temperature which are set before hand. During the non image forming operation in which the image forming apparatus does not carry out an image forming operation, the set temperature of the heating means provided in the exterior heating member is the same temperature as the set temperature of the heating means provided in the abutted fixing member or the pressurizing member.
