Classes 2(2), 2(5), 2(6) and 70 Filled polymer compositions are prepared by treating the polymer with ozone at a temperature below 130‹ C., and then heat-treating in the presence of a filler at 20‹-250‹C. Polymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes and substitution products thereof, organic esters of ethylenic alcohols, ethylenic aldehydes and ketones, ethylenic hydrocarbons, ethylenic mono-carboxylic acids and ester and halogen derivatives thereof, ethylenic polycarboxylic acids and esters thereof, and halogen-substituted olefines; synthetic and natural rubbers; phenol aldehyde condensation polymers; alkyd resins; polyamides; polyurethanes; silicones; amino-plast resins; and cellulose and its esters and ethers are mentioned, with fillers such as carbon black, silica and calcium silicate, china clay, zinc and iron oxides, magnesium and calcium carbonates, lignin, powdered coals, wood and cork dust and celluloses. The ozonization may be carried out before or after the addition of filler and the polymer may be in a dry or powder state, in solution, emulsion or dispersion, or swollen in a partial solvent. The ozone may be carried in air or oxygen. Vulcanization agents and reducing agents may be present during the heating stage. Examples describe the treatment of high and low pressure polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and polyurethane rubber to form filled compositions.
