Device for ultrasonic impact wave treatment of patients, especially for lithotripsy, has an extra-corporeal impact wave head with a shock wave source (2) and an acoustic lens (6), The ultrasonic shock waves of which can be focussed onto a burnt spot (9). The source and lens have different lateral dimensional spreads perpendicular to the spreading direction of the ultrasonic impact waves, in relation to a non-circular, e.g. oval burnt spot. Independent claims are included for: (1) A medical unit, especially a lithotropic unit for treatment of calculus or gall bladder fragments in a patient by ultrasonic shock wave treatment; and (2) A method of treating patients with calculus or gall bladder fragments.
