The system has electrical fuel pumps (EKP1, EKP2) operating depending on a fuel consumption of an internal-combustion engine. A change-over switch (200) connects a control device (300) with the pump (EKP1) and switches the pump (EKP2) during the consumption that lies below a threshold value. The change over switch connects the control device with the pumps and with a power supply during the consumption that exceeds the value. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating two electrical fuel pumps in a fuel supply system of an internal combustion engine.
