<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that can reduce an impact sound and shock banding due to impact vibration since an impact can be relaxed when a developing unit contacts and leaves a photoreceptor belt 10 even when a space for installing a cam mechanism as an impact relaxing device for the impact applied when the developing unit contacts and leaves the photoreceptor belt is not provided. <P>SOLUTION: An openable/closeable external cover 51 of an image forming apparatus main body 50 is provided with an impact absorbing material 53 for relaxing the impact generated when the developing unit 12 contacts and leaves the photoreceptor belt 10. Such impact absorbing material 53 is preferable as has property of gradually shrinking on receiving an impact. When the developing unit 12 leaves the photoreceptor drum 10, a slide portion 12a of the developing unit 12 slides on a guide rail 54 supported on the side of the image forming apparatus main body 50 with an energizing force of an unillustrated leaving spring to abut against a stopper portion 54a, so that the developing unit 12 stops.
