<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and method capable of flexibly dealing with the improvement of various gradation characteristics by means of a simple configuration while controlling graininess in increasing gradation reproduction through the addition of random number signals to image data. <P>SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus creates image data for output as a false intermediate gradation expression by subjecting inputted image data to predetermined image processing. The image processing apparatus comprises a random number generation means for generating the random numbers to be added to the image data; a control information acquisition means for acquiring a plurality of pieces of control information about the amplitude of the random number signals generated; an amplitude control means for controlling the amplitude of the generated random number signals based on the control information acquired by the control information acquisition means according to the positions of pixels in the image data added; and a random number adding means for adding the amplitude-controlled random number signals to the image data. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
