摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method for a liquid crystal display element capable of achieving satisfactory image display by improving the degree of whiteness in a planar state of a chiral nematic liquid crystal, and making contrast and aγcurve appropriate, and to provide a liquid crystal display. SOLUTION: The driving method for the liquid crystal display element comprises holding a liquid crystal layer containing the chiral nematic liquid crystal and additives for controlling the domain size of the liquid crystal between opposed substrates with electrodes. A pulse waveform group including a reset period Trs for resetting the state of the liquid crystal at a homeotropic state, a selection period Ts for selecting the array of the liquid crystal in a final display state, and a retention period Trt for establishing the final display state of the liquid crystal is applied to the liquid crystal layer. The ratio of the period Ts from the end of the reset period up to the start of the retention period and the period Tlc for the transition of the liquid crystal from the homeotropic state to a spiral structure state is so set as to satisfy the relation Tlc×0.7≤Ts≤Tlc×1.3.
