Displacement means are provided for displacing the second optical member relative to the first so as to provide for controlled variation, or retention, of the working angle The optical device is adapted to receive a beam of incident light, typically laser light 18, lying in the common plane to provide for the beam to pass through the first optical member, the plenum chamber and the second optical member and provide for emission from the device of an angularly deviated beam of light. The angle of incidence of the beam on the work piece may also be controlled by rotation of the whole device about an axis II lying in the common plane of tilt of the optical device. Using a thicker optical member can serve to increase the angle of deviation further. The device can be used in a workstation for trepanning or ablation of a workpiece.</p>
