PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an autofocus (AF) system capable of appropriately realizing the detection of the image of a target subject and the automatic tracking of an AF area by changing the size of a range where the image of the target subject to be tracked is fetched as a reference pattern image out of the range of a photographic image according to the distance of the target subject and the focal distance of a photographic lens. SOLUTION: In the autofocus (AF) system for making the AF area being the target range of AF automatically track the target subject to be tracked as the target of focusing, a tracking apparatus 16 stores the image of the target subject to be tracked as the target of focusing as the reference pattern image, and detects an image coincident with the reference pattern image from a photographic image by pattern matching processing, whereby the AF area is moved to the position of the image of the target subject. The reference pattern image is successively updated whenever the pattern matching processing on a new photographic image is performed, and the size of a range where a new reference pattern image is fetched is changed based on the subject distance and the focal distance.
