PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently ensure the rigidity of a vehicle body by effectively reinforcing a recession part formed on a roof side rail as an installation part of an upper guide rail by a simple constitution. SOLUTION: In the upper body structure for the automobile, the recession part 17 for arranging the upper guide rail 6 of a slide door is formed between a roof rail outer panel 8a and a roof rail inner panel 12 constituting the roof side rail 1 and is installed such that a front end or a rear end is extended near an installation part of a center pillar. An extension part 15b extending into the roof side rail 1 is provided on an upper part of a pillar inner panel constituting the center pillar or a pillar reinforcement and is joined to a guide rail support member 6 arranged on the recession part 17.
