PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further improve a method of testing a function of a position measuring device for creating a position value using a position detection unit in monitoring a measuring scale. SOLUTION: Correction values Npv1 and Npv2 are stored under two different memory addresses in the position measuring device 1. The position measuring device 1 accesses the correction value Npv1 under one memory address to form a certain mathematical relationship between the control value and a belonging position value. An evaluating unit 3 accesses the correction value Npv2 under the other memory address when the existence of the mathematical relationship between the control value and the belonging position value is tested.
