Disclosed is the use of a therapeutically effective amount of an estrogen and a therapeutically effective amount of a selective estrogen receptor modulator, in the manufacture of a medicament for reducing or eliminating the incidence of menopausal symptoms, wherein the modulator is a different compound from the estrogen and is not a benzothiophene derivative. The symptoms to be reduced or eliminated include osteoporosis, hypercholesterolemia, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, hypertension, Alzheimer's disease, insulin resistance, diabetes, loss of muscle mass, obesity, vaginal bleeding induced by hormone replacement therapy, and breast tenderness induced by hormone replacement therapy.
