PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device for displaying videos on the basis of video signals inputted from a tape medium reproducing apparatus or a tape medium recording and reproducing apparatus by which (black) parts where no video is displayed are not produced at the top and the bottom of a display screen during a special reproduction operation such as "reproduction with fast-forwarding" or "reproduction with fast-rewind". SOLUTION: When inputted signals are video signals (Step 31) and frequency of the vertical synchronizing signals of the image signals is judged to be non-standard signals (Step 32), the vertical size of the screen is extended (Step 34). In this way, (black) parts where no video is displayed are not produced at the top and the bottom of the display screen during a special reproduction operation such as "reproduction with fast-forwarding" or "reproduction with fast-rewind" (in the case of non-standard signals).
