PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically manage a logical volume which is a recording unit of a data file without being conscious of a library device by a user regarding a data management method, device and a hierarchical type storage device. SOLUTION: In a data management method in a hierarchical type virtual storage system which virtually uses the library device having a plurality of recording media as a part of a hard disk device, mounting of the recording media to the library device and ejection of the recording media from the library device are managed by a data base by unit of set consisting of the plurality of recording media, the logical volume which is the recording unit of a data file in the library device is constituted by one or the plurality of recording media and the logical volume is made correspond to the set and managed by the data base.
