A donning carriage which travels along the doffed spindles 61 (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) of a spinning or like machine has a magazine 5 for empty tubes which is rotatable about a vertical axis. Sorted, empty tubes 1 are moved by a conveyor 10 onto a slide 2. The slide is reciprocated about its pivoted upper end (3) (Fig. 2, not shown) so that the tube thereon slides down and into contact with the rotating magazine 5. During rotation of magazine the tube falls into a recess in the magazine and is carried round until it reaches an opening in the bottom 9 of the magazine. At this point it falls onto an empty spindle and is driven down by a roller 8 in a pivoted lever 7. To deal with different spindle spacings magazine 5 may be changed for a different one having different radial dimensions and/or a different number of recesses.
