PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a facsimile relay system, an image reading apparatus, a facsimile relay apparatus, and a facsimile relay method and program whereby a plurality of image reading apparatuses are usable as transmission facsimile machines, without impairing the usability of the users. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes a facsimile relay request means for transmitting inquiry information to apparatuses connected to a first communications network, at the same time, and transmitting image data generated by reading a transmission original to the apparatus for replying response information, and the facsimile relay apparatus includes a facsimile relay means that replies with the response information denoting the availability of faxing to a sender of the inquiry information, when the facsimile relay means receives the inquiry information and a facsimile transmission means is in a state of capable of faxing, and uses the facsimile transmission means to fax the received image data over a second communications network when receiving the image data from the sender.
