PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device for an automatic transmission, having a higher degree of freedom in layout with a reduced size of a select lever and select lever operating force property as required while actualizing fail range change-over operation with the mechanical connection of the select lever to a select position change-over device. SOLUTION: A position sensor 6 is provided for detecting a relative displacement. A controller 3 has a first drive permission determining part 31 for computing the operation position displacement of the select lever from the relative displacement and determining the drive permission of an assist actuator, a second drive permission determining part 32 for computing an operating speed from the relative displacement and determining the drive of the assist actuator from the operating speed, and a third drive permission determining means for determining the drive permission from the result of the first drive permission determination and the result of the second drive permission determination.
