PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an earthquake-proof and anti-fall device for books capable of being easily fixed on a bookshelf, having a sufficient strength and no hindrance of introduction/removal of a book thereby as a general-purpose part for preventing the books housed in the bookshelf devoid of a front cover or the like for covering the front from falling out through an unpredicted action such as an earthquake. SOLUTION: A symmetrical rod (book guard) having the strength enough to support the fall of the books is cranked at both ends and both of the ends are inserted into shelf dowel insertion holes. The holes are expectedly disposed on side plates of a conventional book shelf for receiving a movable shelf. When the books standing on the shelf in a row tend to fall through the earthquake or the like, if the book guard is in a state of forward tumble, upper parts of the books are retained by the book guard, thereby preventing the books from falling out.
