A method of reading and processing radiation image information, in which a cassette (1) is lowered with the short sides of the cassette (1) aligned in the vertical direction, the cassette (1) is inserted into an insertion opening (21) in the upper part of a radiation image reading apparatus, the inserted cassette (1) is taken into the apparatus, engagement between a front plate (12) and a back plate (11) is released in the apparatus to separate them from each other, the front plate (12) and the back plate (11) are engaged after radiation image information is read from a photostimulable phosphor sheet of the back plate (11) separated from the front plate (12),and the cassette (1) is discharged from the insertion opening in the upper part of the apparatus. In comparison with a method of reading a photostimulable phosphor sheet after pulling it out of the cassette (1), the height of the apparatus can be restricted to be less, so that lifting operation of the cassette (1), at the time of cassette insertion, up to the height of the upper surface of the apparatus can be eliminated.
