The invention relates to a coffee machine, especially an espresso or coffee pad machine, comprising an electric instantaneous water heater (22) for heating water transported by means of a pump (68) via a delivery line (80) from a storage tank (20), said water being guided under pressure, after being heated, into a brewing chamber (24), for the preparation of the coffee. A safety valve (72) is provided outside the instantaneous water heater (22), for automatically reducing excess pressure. The aim of the invention is to improve one such coffee machine in such a way that the excess pressure in the system can be silently reduced without damaging the materials. To this end, the safety valve (72) is arranged upstream of the inlet of the instantaneous water heater (22). The inventive embodiment enables cold water, instead of aggressive water vapour, to be guided away via the safety valve, reducing the noise and causing less damage to the materials.
