PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide anα-carbon neighboring to a hydrogenated electron-withdrawing group with a methyl group. SOLUTION: The process comprises a step for preparing a molecule containing anα-carbon and an electron-withdrawing group; a reaction step for causing the molecule to react with dimethyl ether in the presence of an acid catalyst to substitute theα-carbon with a methyl group; and a hydrogenating step for hydrogenating the electron-withdrawing group to provide the hydrogenated electron-withdrawing group neighboring to the methyl group-substitutedα-carbon, and is carried out in a vapor phase, a liquid phase or a slurry phase.
