PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a multibeam scanning optical apparatus capable of accurately positioning a scanning lens without deteriorating the face accuracy of a reference face for positioning even when the effective part of a scanning lens and the shape of a main scanning cross section are asymmetric with respect to an optical axis, and to provide an image forming apparatus using the multibeam scanning optical apparatus. SOLUTION: An optical scanner has a deflection means which deflects a luminous flux emitted from a light source and a scanning optical means having one or more scanning lenses which focus the luminous flux deflected with the deflection means on a face to be scanned. The one or more scanning lenses have a recessed part on the outer part out of the effective part region of at least one of the lenses interposing the optical axis, and the reference face for positioning is formed in the recessed part to position the scanning lens in the optical axis direction.
