PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic device equipped with an image display device having an image reading function and an image reading method for preventing leakage of irradiation light when an image is read without using an original cover. SOLUTION: A scanner device 1A has an image display unit 2, as a manuscript placing table, with an image reading function. The image display unit 2 having an image reading function carries out display control on an integrated flat panel 112 so that only light of the reading area, where the original is placed, is transmitted and the light of the out-of-reading area, where the original is not placed, is not transmitted or the transmission rate thereof is decreased. Then, the leakage of irradiation light can be prevented without an original cover, while displacement of the original caused by the original cover can be prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
