An internal combustion engine (in particular a diesel engine) comprises a means for supplying fuel vapour to an inlet manifold, and a means for supplying liquid fuel to a combustion chamber of the engine or the inlet manifold. A controller controls the supply means such that under light load conditions most or all of the fuel is supplied via the vapour supply means. In a first phase of an embodiment engine power output is increased by progressively opening a combustion air control means (for example a throttle) and progressively increasing the fuel supplied by the vapour supply means. In a second phase a means for controlling the emission of combustion air is maintained at a constant state (for example a wide open throttle state) and power output is increased by supplying progressively more fuel from the liquid fuel supply means. The vapour fuel supply means may be a vaporiser, and the liquid fuel supply means may be an injector. |
