Reinforced reticulated polyurethane foam is prepared by reacting a mixture containing an organic polyisocyanate, water, a polymeric polyol having an average M.W. of 500 to 6000 and short staple fibres in an amount of at least 10À5% by weight, based on the weight of the polymeric polyol, in the presence of a catalyst to form a polyurethane foam and reticulating the foam. The polymeric polyol is suitably a polyoxypropylene triol and the catalyst suitably a tertiary amine and/or an organotin compound. The reaction mixture may contain a silicone emulsifying agent and a further blowing agent such as trichlorofluoromethane. Rayon, nylon, polyacrylonitrile or cotton fibres are preferred having a denier of 0À1 to 30 and a length of 0À03 to 10 mm. Reticulation is suitably carried out by a combustion method and the reinforced reticulated polyurethane foam may then be compressed by means of heated rollers. |
