1,200,315. Direct connections. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP. 18 Dec., 1967 [27 Dec., 1966], No. 57452/67. Heading H2E. [Also in Divisions C6-C7] Electrical connection is made between two conductors having different co-efficients of thermal expansion by fitting a portion of one conductor into a recess in the other with a clearance so chosen that when the temperature of the connection changes from the assembly temperature to a working temperature the two conductors are brought into sufficiently forceful contact to give a low-resistance connection, the clearance not being so small that stresses set up would lead to increase in resistance. As shown, the connection is made between a steel collector bar and the graphite cathode of an aluminium cell. The recess may extend along one surface from one side to another and may have a circular, rectangular or trapezoidal cross-section (Figs. 7a to 7d, not shown). |
