A plurality of display planes (1L1, 1L2; 1R1, 1R2) of each of a respective two display devices (4103) are located at different distances from the left eye, and the right eye, of an observer (4100), and two-dimensional images are displayed on the plurality of the display planes with respect to the left eye and with respect to the right eye of the observer so as to produce a three-dimensional image. Two-dimensional parallax images of a display object are generated, and the luminance of the generated two-dimensional images is independently changed for each of the plurality of the display planes with respect to the left eye and the right eye of the observer, and the resulting two-dimensional images (1L5, 1L6, 1RS, 1R6) are displayed on the plurality of the display planes (1L1, 1L2, 1R1, 1R2) and viewed.
