The invention relates to a process for production of halobenzaldehydes or halonitrobenzaldehydes by hydrolysing appropriately substituted benzal halides which may contain a nitro group, a bromine atom, an iodine atom and/or a chlorine atom in the 2- and 6-position at elevated temperatures in the presence of a catalyst wherein hydrolysis is carried out with formic acid at a temperature of from 0‹ to 130‹ C. and in the presence of a halide of a metal of sub-group II, VII or VIII or main group III or V of the Periodic Table. The process may be carried out in the presence of the corresponding substituted benzyl halides. In an example, to a mixture of 2,6-dichlorobenzal chloride and 2,6-dichlorobenzyl chloride are added zinc chloride and formic acid and the mixture heated when 2,6-dichlorobenzaldehyde is subsequently obtained.
