The device has a holder (11) for unwinding an adhesive tape (12) from a tape roller, and another holder (13) for winding a protective band e.g. masking tape, which is provided on one side of the tape. An applicator roll (15) applies the tape on a paper roll, and a stripping unit (17) is provided at the roll such that the unit supports the separation of the band from the tape and absorbs the force generated due to the separation. An independent claim is also included for a method for applying an adhesive tape on a printing paper roll.
