The invention is directed towards a system and method for identifying an edge (202) of a crop, comprising the following steps: emitting a transmitted radiation pattern (205) within a defined spatial zone (210); collecting one or more images of the defined spatial zone (210); detecting a presence of crop edge (202) between a harvested portion (204) and unharvested portion (200) of a field based on an observed illumination radiation pattern on the crop edge (202) formed by at least a portion of the transmitted radiation pattern (205); and identifying image coordinate data, in the collected image, associated with the detected crop edge (202).
