In a matrix memory in which the x, y drive lines cross each other a plurality of times to define a group of storage elements at each set of intersections of the y drive lines with the x drive lines, the y drive lines are divided into two portions each including a switch so that y drive current can be operatively or not operatively linked with a respective group of elements. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 three x drive lines X1, X2, X3 and three column y drive lines Y1, Y2, Y3 cross each other three times to form three matrices 1, 2, 3 as shown, each column line coupling three storage elements e.g. E111, E121, E131 in each matrix which elements form a group. As shown, each y drive line is divided into two parallel portions e.g. Y<SP>1</SP>11 and Y<SP>11</SP>11 one of which Y<SP>1</SP>11 links the storage elements and the other by-passes them so that drive currents can pass through the portion linking the cores or by-pass the elements. Each portion of the y conductor is connected as shown to primary windings U<SP>1</SP>11, S<SP>1</SP>11 of two transformers U, S. In operation assuming all the elements to be in the " 0 " state and element E132 is to be changed to its " 1 " state current pulses are applied to drive lines x 3 , y 2 . In addition a pulse is applied to terminal P11 of transistor T11 so that the transistor becomes conductive and one of the secondary windings U<SP>11</SP>11, U<SP>11</SP>12 is short circuited depending upon the direction of current in the driver line Y2. Since the impedance of the primary winding U<SP>1</SP>12 is determined by the impedance of the load presented to the secondary winding U<SP>11</SP>11, U<SP>11</SP>12 current from the drive current source passes through drive line Y<SP>1</SP>12. Transistor T12 of transformer S is not energized so that the primary winding Y<SP>1</SP>12 presents a high impedance to the drive pulse on drive conductor Y2. The coincident currents on drive lines X3, Y2 thus switch the element E132 to its " 1 " state. Similarly elements E232 or E332 in matrices 2, 3 may be switched or not by controlling the conductivities of transistors T21, T22 and T31, T32 so that current flows through drive line portions Y<SP>1</SP>22, Y<SP>1</SP>32 or Y<SP>11</SP>22, Y<SP>11</SP>32 respectively. Any change of state of the elements is sensed by sense windings L1, L2, L3. In the arrangement of Fig. 4 the y drive lines are connected in pairs as shown each drive line of a pair having its own switches. The storage elements may be ferrite toroids or ferro-electric material.
