PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a recording and reproducing apparatus and the method thereof in which operability is greatly improved by rapidly displaying thumbnail images. SOLUTION: The apparatus is capable of browsing thumbnail images by recording image data in a recording medium such as a disk medium. The thumbnail images, which are displayed on a display screen as a list at the beginning of reproducing, are stored at a prescribed position of a thumbnail image file during recording and recorded in the disk medium.
