PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a rod type solid state laser producing a high laser output with excellent beam quality at a low cost by reducing thermal lens strength of the rod type solid state laser medium under a constant pumping power thereby increasing the maximum laser output being extracted from a single rod type solid state laser medium. SOLUTION: Optical axis of pumping light being emitted from a plurality of directions is offset by a constant distance from the optical axis of a rod type solid state laser medium, and pumping light sources are arranged at an equal angular interval about the optical axis of a solid state laser rod on a plane intersecting the optical axis of the solid state laser rod perpendicularly. Assuming the number of irradiating directions of pumping light is n, radius of the rod type solid state laser medium is r, absorption coefficient of the rod type solid state laser medium for the pumping light wavelength is a, and offset amount of the optical axis of pumping light isΔ, a pumping section is arranged to satisfy a relation (Δ/r)/än×exp(-a×r)}>0.2.
