PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excavator for use in embedding a steel pipe forming a pipe roof functioning as a guide of an underground structure, prior to propulsion and embedding of the underground structure as a subway under a track, wherein the excavator can efficiently embed the steel pipe at a scheduled location by checking the ground of a working face and excavation conditions ahead of the steel pipe. SOLUTION: The excavator is formed of the steel pipe 1, a camera 4 and a lens washing liquid ejecting nozzle 5 for the camera 4, which are detachably arranged in a front end aperture, and a screw auger 3 inserted into the steel pipe 1. While the screw auger 3 carries out excavation of the frontward ground to propel and embed the steel pipe in the ground, the camera 4 observes the excavation conditions and the state of the ground of the working face. Thus when wood pieces such as sleepers are present, the screw auger 3 is drawn from the steel pipe to be replaced by a wood piece crushing cutting edge, and then the screw auger 3 is inserted into the steel pipe again to carry out excavation of the frontward ground, to thereby propel and embed the steel pipe 1.
