PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the efficiency of a rack and pinion type steering device while maintaining a cross angle of a input shaft and a rack, i.e., a shaft crossing angle to a range of 20-25[°]. SOLUTION: Since the rack 3 and a pinion gear 2 are engaged so as to be almost perpendicular, tooth trace slide is not generated, slide friction loss of engagement surfaces is reduced and the efficiency of the rack and pinion type steering device 10 is enhanced. Since a universal joint is provided between the input shaft 7 and the pinion gear 2, the pinion gear 2 and the rack 3 can be engaged so as to be approximately perpendicular and can be connected to an intermediate shaft 6 for transmitting power from a steering column to the input shaft 7 without stress.
