A screw for processing highly viscous materials in a single screw device, especially for rubber, and providing turbulent flow, has an intake section 2, a section 4 with a backfeeding single or multi-start thread 5 having regular or irregular interruptions 6, and a section 8 with a two-start thread, the two threads having different pitch angles, the thread 10 downstream of which the groove progressively decreases having transverse grooves 11. As shown the thread 10 is also wider than the thread 9; both taper at their ends to provide free communication with adjacent zones. There may be a single or multiple start output screw 15. The apparatus may be cooled.
