Expansible paper web roll spindle comprises a core provided with a number of axially extending under-cut grooves in which are disposed inflatable bags acting radially on bases of longitudinally extending rails from one longitudinal edge of which extends an arcuate gripper whose upper surface grips the inner face of the web roll and whose free longitudinal edge overlaps the adjacent rail.
