PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and high-performance tube type heat exchanger, capable of extending length of a pipe for heat exchange within a limited dimension, improving reliability against water leak at a branch part for diverging fluid, of which compressive resistant strength is secured and a water heater provided with the tube type heat exchanger. SOLUTION: The tube type heat exchanger consists of a flexible outer tube 1, a metal inner tube 10 inserted in the outer tube 1 along its axial direction with a gap 2 formed in between an inner wall of the outer tube 1, a branch member B, attached to both end parts of a pipe member A consisting of the outer tube 1 and the metal inner tube 10, for introducing or discharging respectively different fluid to the outer tube 1 and the metal inner tube 10. In this case, a leakage detection tube 13 with a gap part 12 can be provided on an outer wall of the metal inner tube 10.
