The cleaning unit (1) has a cleaning cloth web to clean the cylinder or roll. The cleaning cloth is in the form of a roll on a core. It is soaked in cleaning fluid and is inside a protective case. The core consists of a spindle (2) carrying the roll of cloth (4) and able to be inserted in a cloth washing device. The cleaning cloth is soaked in cleaning fluid to less than its satiation limit. There is a gaseous surrounding atmosphere (10) between the roll and the protective case.
