PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brake device of simple structure capable of stopping rotation of a rotary shaft, while restricting a load to be applied to the rotary shaft small. SOLUTION: The brake device 1 is provided with a disk 2 to be fitted to the rotary shaft 4 and a slide-friction braking part 3 to be brought in contact with the disk 2 to brake rotation of the disk 2 with friction force. The disk 2 is provided with recessed and projecting parts 5, 6, for changing contact pressure with the slide-friction braking part 3 to brake with pulsation. Alternatively, the disk 2 is formed of a material obtained by compounding a thermal expansion material 7 in a disk main body part 2a, and the heat due to friction between the disk 2 and the slide-friction braking part 3 is transmitted to the thermal expansion material 7, and the thermal expansion material 7 is expanded to increase a contact area of the disk 2 with the slide-friction braking part.
