PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear capable of mechanically changing valve opening characteristics in a compact composition. SOLUTION: Rotary motion of a cam shaft 120 is input in a valve 104 through the medium of a rocking member 150. A slide surface 156 is formed on the rocking member 150. Intermediate members 170, 172 are arranged so as to come into contact with both the slide surface 156 and a drive cam surface 124. A supporting member 166 for supporting the intermediate members 170, 172 is mounted in the control member 160. The control member 160 is rotatable with respect to the cam shaft 120, and is interlocked to the control shaft 132 through the medium of rotary interlocking mechanisms 134, 162. The intermediate members 170, 172 are interlocked with rotation of the control shaft 132 to rotate the control member 160. By so doing, the intermediate members 170, 172 are moved along the drive cam surface 124 and the slide surface 156 so as to change valve opening characteristics of a valve in interlock with the positional change thereof.
