PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL device excellent in life/luminous efficiency and thermal/electric stability and having extremely long driving life by using a metal complex or a luminescent solid exhibiting phosphorescence emission and suitable as a luminescent material, a color-converting material, etc., in organic EL elements, lighting systems, etc. SOLUTION: The metal complex has a metal atom, a tridentate ligand binding in tridentate through three nitrogen atoms of a first nitrogen atom, a second nitrogen atom and a third nitrogen atom to the metal atom and a monodentate ligand binding to the metal atom.
