A laundry dryer comprises a drying chamber, an opening for inserting and removing laundry from the chamber, a closure for sealably closing the opening in the chamber and a means for reducing the internal pressure of the chamber. There may be provided means for agitating the laundry in the chamber, this may be by rotating the drying chamber. The drying chamber may be a cylinder, drum or boiler shaped. A pressure less than atmospheric pressure may be created in the drying chamber, the pressure may be less than 10 kPa and may be between 10 Pa and 1000 Pa. The drying chamber may be reinforced to withstand external pressure. The means for reducing pressure may comprise an outlet conduit connected to a pump, with the outlet conduit capable of being sealably closed, isolating the chamber from the pump once the chamber has attained the operating pressure. The dryer may be a washer/dryer with an inlet for the admission of water that is sealably closed before the pressure of the chamber is reduced. The pressure of the chamber may be electronically controlled such that it is automatically raised and lowered during drying. |
