PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a foreign matter detection method, a foreign matter detection program, and a foreign matter detector capable of certainly detecting a foreign matter mixing into an object under inspection of a canned food. SOLUTION: This foreign matter detection method for detecting whether foreign matter has got mixed in the object under inspection by processing an image of X rays transmitted by the object of the canned food comprises a foreign matter candidate image generating stage (S3) for generating, from the X ray image, a foreign matter candidate image formed of a rim foreign matter image indicating a rim and a foreign matter adjacent to the rim and an isolated foreign matter image indicating a foreign matter isolated from the rim, a first foreign matter extracting stage (S4) for extracting the isolated foreign matter from the foreign matter candidate image, a second foreign matter extracting stage (S5) for extracting the foreign matter adjacent to the rim by detecting a projection projecting on the inner periphery of the rim foreign matter image from the foreign matter candidate image, and a foreign matter synthesizing and outputting stage (S6) for synthesizing and outputting the extracted isolated foreign matter and the foreign matter adjacent to the rim.
